Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My wife recently hit a semi tire tread on the
freeway at 80.  It damaged the bumpers
exaust and engine cradle. Shop cost was
est. At $6500.  All said snd done it totalled
$15000+.  All due to the alignment cost.
According to list of repairs the alignment
was subleted at a cost of $8744.  Am i
wrong in thinking something is fishy here?

Was this covered by insurance? Did an adjuster look at damage?

It was covered by ins. I dont know about the adjuster. It was towed to shop that the ins. recomended. They gave an est., Ins. approved. Im concerned because i have spotted items suposedly replaced by shop that were not. If thats the case what else wasnt done and concidering that cross members were damaged suppesedly replaced along with the engine cradle, is it safe to drive. I looked and there are bushings that are cracked and worn out that an $8700 alignment should have replaced.

My wife is contacting her ins in the morning and going to request they have her car inspected by a different shop. I really would like to see just what was involved in that $8700 sublet alignment. That according to what we were told, in the daily updates, couldnt have taken more then a few hrs.

The original quote was for $6700. Final cost was 15000. Our deduc. Was 500 its all done and payed.

Sounds like someone put the decimal point in the wrong place for the alignment! They may have straightened the vehicle, not an alignment as we normally think of it. Personally I would have taken the check and bought a new vehicle. I realize the vehicle is only 5 years old. But major damage like that is not worth fixing in my opinion. Let this be a learning experience! Hope that helps! Jim

Thats the problem. We were told the cost would be lessn then 7000. Then when its all said and done we look and see the total of over 15000. The ins payed the shop yesterday and we were not able to pick up the car till after 5 today because the shop was suposedly having it detailed. there is no way it was even put thru an automatic car wash. The ins is esurance and they have always treated us great. But this seems shady

Since the insurance paid for it I would forget about it.

And it takes a little more then half a day to straighten a car from my exp. I have worked on everything from dirt bikes to semi trks . If i had the time and facilities i prob could have done the repares myself im just looking for other opinions about the matter

If you are concerned and it doesn't feel right. Consider trading it in on something else before the accident possibly hits the Carfax to maximize your deal.

Your insurance company should be the ones looking at that price since they're the ones on the hook paying for it. Something doesn't sound right, those prices are insane. You certainly should not be seeing old/used parts where the repairs were made. Talk to your Esurance claims adjuster and bring this to their attention.

Obviously a mistake or typo. If the insurance paid it they are idiots.

Unfortunately it's been my experience that insurance companies really don't care about the quality of the work that they're paying for. Many years ago I had a car repainted because it was vandalized. I made the mistake of using a local body shop to do the job. It was absolutely horrible and I refused to pay until they made it right! The insurance company had issued the check to me and it was up to me to pay the body shop. I did contact the insurance company hoping they would back me and send someone to the body shop but they wouldn't. It finally took a call to my local Office of Consumer Affairs to get the job done right. They sent someone to the body shop, inspected the vehicle, and issued a complaint on my behalf. Only then did the job get done right! I learned two things from that experience. First never use a mom and pop auto body shop, and second, the insurance company couldn't care less about what they're paying for! Hope that helps! Jim
