Whining at high RPM/heavy throttle

Asked by GuruK2CSQ Dec 15, 2019 at 11:20 PM about the 2015 Ford Taurus SE

Question type: General

I just bought a 2015 Ford Taurus SE 3.5L (non-turbo) with 22K miles.  it runs beautifully.  However, at high RPM and high throttle when moving it makes a whining sound that sounds exactly like a supercharger, although not as loud.  If I set it to sport shift mode and allow it to wind up to high RPM at low to moderate throttle (accelerating slowly to moderately, but not letting it shift until redline) it does not make the sound.  It also won't make the sound when the car is in park/neutral.  This is making it difficult to tell where the sound is coming from.  I've never had a Taurus before, so I don't know if this whining is normal (e.g., maybe something to do with the variable cam timing?).

In case it's relevant or related, I will also note the following.  Sometimes I distinctly smell transmission fluid.  However, the car is not leaking a drop of anything.  I've closely inspected every square inch of the motor, transmission and exhaust with a snake camera and everything is clean enough to eat off of.  There's not a drop of any oil, coolant and transmission fluid on anything.  Using a data logger and other tools and doing lots of testing, the transmission, coolant and exhaust temperatures are all within normal range.  I don't know whether the above-said sound is coming from or related to the above-said whine.

As I said, I've never owned or even driven a Taurus before now, so I don't know whether any of the above is normal.  Any insight is greatly appreciated!

Check your power stirring pump. See if it has atf in it or power stirring fluid. Could be the cause of your smell. Also check the transmission fluid in the tranny by smell. You can pull the dip stick and see if it is burnt or has silver in it.

So, it turns out that the transmission fluid was very low - not a drop on the dipstick. I just bought this car 2 days ago and the dealer told me it went through a 35-point inspection, so I assumed they would have checked the transmission fluid level. I guess transmission fluid level isn't one of the 35 points! >:^( I put in some fluid and both the whining sound and transmission fluid smell went away. By the way, and thankfully, what little fluid was still in the transmission looked brand new with no burnt smell and no metal shavings/dust, si I think I got very lucky!
