Car without exhaust connected to
muffler makes a popping noise when
shifting at higher RPMs. Will this hurt
the engine?  Only muffler is by passed

The popping might be excess gas vapors igniting. Nothing to worry about as far as I know. Why would you want to be an obnoxious twit? Be respectful of others.

Farting and popPing in public is annoying and the original question poster should be banned from this site. WHAT AN ASS......

Wow ! Such behavior from supposed adults is beyond comprehension. The guy's question is a legitimate one. The amount of backpressure will effect the engine in a detrimental way. The exhaust valves may burn out quicker. If you need to increase the sound, put a Borla or other system on the car. Do some research.

Just because the original poster is either stupid, naive, or inconsiderate shouldn't trip us into abusive snarkiness...except I'm guilty often, too.... Goowin Racing and Flying Miata both sell nice one-piece stainless mufflers that will reduce back pressure and get you a reasonable, but not obnoxious, burble. Just don't be a dork and illegally screw around with your cat conv.

Coming from someone who has to live next to a 23 year with aspirations of having the loudest fart blowing Miata ever in a suburban neighborhood, don’t do it. He found out the hard way after a years time of disturbance just how much fines and being sent to court can pile up. You’ll make more and more enemies the longer and louder you keep trying to feel your car through your throat.
