2015 Mazda cx-5 needs new spark plug at 63,000. Should I be concerned?

Asked by Tonya Jan 18, 2018 at 08:47 AM about the 2015 Mazda CX-5 Touring

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I test drove a Mazda cx-5 touring yesterday and the check engine light was on.
The service dept said it had a bad spark plug that they then replaced.  Should I
be concerned?  Walk away from the sale?  Or is this a minor issue?  Thank
you.

I'd be more concerned about the mileage, it has twice what a typical two year old car has, so this was used for some serious commuting or an Uber car or delivery car. I'd check into it's history a little more.

There are too many companies out there that buy a new vehicle knowing that in two years time they'll dump it, and rack up a ton of mileage in that time with minimal maintenance (why maintain a vehicle you have no intention of keeping) - hence they get an oil change every 10k or 15k miles, or just topped off. I do not trust relatively new cars with high miles for that reason, without knowing it's previous ownership.

A bad spark plug could be one with a cracked insulator. That would not be of great concern to me. Now if all the spark plugs were badly worn at 63,000 miles, that would lead me to believe that the vehicle had 100,000 or more miles on it. So 1 spark plug bad with the associated check engine light illuminated would not cause me not to buy it. I would spend $100 bucks or so getting it looked over by an independent 3rd party or buy an extended warranty. The Mazda CX-5 is a pretty reliable vehicle.

Miles driven in 2 years rather than 4 is no concern at all as it makes absolutely no difference how fast the miles were racked up AS LONG as the maintenance was kept up. Normal maintenance with those miles would be oil changes and filter changes, not much else.

Just walk away there are plenty of other cars out there
