Front Strut Replacement

Asked by tonytonitone22 Dec 07, 2017 at 01:31 PM about the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT Z71 Double Cab 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I bout some rancho replacement struts (shock portion only) and wanted to know the best procedure to replace these. I've done one side already and I had to remove the upper control arm balljoint and sway bar link to even get the shock to fit in to be mounted. The coil spring itself is supported on bottom by the strut which makes this so hard

I always used a spring compressor to move and replace. If you don't have the right tools, it is always harder and some times with the proper tools, you might have to remove other parts., But really understand your question, are looking for a easier way or is this the standard way. Every car and truck have different ways of replacing a part.

Thanks Mark. I have a spring compressor that I used. Although getting clearance to get both clamps on either side of the spring was difficult. It seemed like clamping in the locations I did compressed one side of the coil and made the other side expand. I ended up getting the strut in by using a 3 ton floor jack under the lower control arm to compress the whole assembly, and a ratchet strap to realign the brake/hub assembly to re attach the upper control arms.
