14 Ram 5.7 misfire and power problems

Asked by The_Dogs_Ram Oct 04, 2020 at 11:16 AM about the 2014 RAM 1500 Express Quad Cab 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

One day while doing my regular bi weekly commute of
about 130 miles, my acted as if someone simply flipped a
switch and lost low end power and mpg. If I was gentle, I
could average 19 mpg going over the mountain pass. I got
15 that day. No CEL came up so I burnt off every ounce of
fuel and ran another tank of 97 octane with some fuel
treatment. I burnt every ounce of that down and got about
16 mpg. The next tank was back to 15. After talking to a
shop, they also recommend changing the plugs. I also
mentioned a light ticking noise. I was 50% since my last oil
change. The issues all started about 97K. It was now 98K
so since plugs were due very soon, I had a full OEM tune
up. Then things went downhill. Power loss was worse.
Misfire on #5 and ticking stayed the same. No CEL light
right away, but when pulling into the passing lane to get
around a q-tip (white hair, white shoes) in an RV, I reved to
about 4 to 5k and there it was, CEL flashed and it felt like I
was driving on a rumble strip. My oil pressure was now
about 30 psi going down the highway when its normally in
the 40's. I took it straight to the dealer. The mechanic said
he couldn't get the CEL to come back, 20 psi oil pressure
was "normal" and after swapping coils, checking the plugs
and opening the valve cover, he couldn't fing anything
wrong. They had me come back to get it. I drove it for 5
minutes and it threw the code again. I drove straight back
to the dealer. This time they looked at the injectors and said
#5 was a bit clogged so they cleaned them, drove 40 Mike's
to verify no CEL and had me come get it. 3rd time, I drove it
and within about 5 min, guess what, same CEL and this
time oil pressure dropped as low as 15. I took photos of the
CEL with the odometer and low oil pressure level, nursed it
back to the dealer and told them to try again. So, if an ASE
mechanic from the dealer can't figure this one out, maybe
someone else can give me direction.

Loss of power
Ticking
#5 misfire above 4K

Ask them what the freeze frame data is reporting. The Freeze Frame Data is the data that the computer collects and saves at the exact time a code was thrown...The data includes Temperature, O2, Crankshaft, Camshaft, Throttle Position, MAP, MAF sensors and voltages, vehicle speed, RPM, vacuum, fuel pressures, oil pressures. it tells the perfect story of exactly what the engine was doing at that precise moment.
