Car Won't Start in The Rain

Asked by Carbeetn Dec 13, 2018 at 08:51 PM about the 2014 Toyota Corolla LE

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Sometime in the summer time, my car stopped starting when it would rain, or
if it was very humid outside.

I had a hunch, my alternator is on it's way out, I already knew this by the
power drains I see (if I'm incorrect about that someone please let me know).

So one time I got the genius idea (out of frustration) to dry out my alternator
and distributor cap by blowing on them with hot hair.

Well, the first 3-4 times I have done this it has worked. Today, it didn't work.
So Something is keeping the spark from reaching my engine in wet weather.
And I'm not sure what is causing this. But the blow dryer trick had seemed to
work and it doesn't really make sense.

The car sounds like it wants to start, but it just doesn't want to turn over.

Check engine light on? Clean your mass air flow sensor also.

Load test your battery and alternator. YouTube the subject. It is easy with a voltmeter. ChrisFix has a good video. How to test an alternator. Is the title.

I would also suspect a coil being bad. If your check engine light is on and you have a P0301 thru P0304 this could be a coil cracked. One of those codes is all it takes not necessarily all four

Take negative post off battery and then put dielectric grease on your alternator pigtail connections and all four of your coil on plug pigtails. This will help keep moisture out of your circuit. Put negative back on.
