1989 gmc 5.7 liter replaced engine with slightly used rebuilt engine from a junk yard .i used my distirbuter coil and carb .i'm getting spark and fuel cheched timing several times only back fires i tried starter fluid went to start it back fired but this time it blew the valvue covers out

The timing or firing order has to be off. When putting in the distributor, did you bring #1 piston up on the compression stroke and to TDC?
