Rear wheel bearing noise

Asked by Guru15Z3M Aug 23, 2019 at 11:37 AM about the 2014 Subaru Forester 2.5i

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I was told by the dealer that the rear wheel bearing on driver side makes noise,
$400-500 to get this part replaced and fixed. Is this bearing issue common to a
Subaru car? My other old cars never have such issue, particularly the rear
wheel bearing. It is Forester 2014, 73k miles.

Wheel bearing failure, esp rear, is common on Subies for generations...as well many modern AWD vehicles. Recent Subies use an integrated bearing-hub assy, so labor is only 0.75-1.5hrs, depending upon rust level. Part cost is $50-125 depending upon source. The dealer is of course able to only sell you the inflated cost OE one, and knocking you a full 2+hrs for labor. These jobs are so common that indy wrenches can save get it done for as little as $200. They should know to never pound nor over-torque the new assy and not break the ABS sensor cable. Expect the opposite side to follow in 1-5 years. The fronts are more durable, mysteriously, given they're the same duty rating and mass. TSG/B
