I would use a repair manual but use a crank pulley wrench, breaker bar, socket and extension to turn motor in-order to find number one piston at top dead center, as high up in the cylinder as it will go before dropping back down from the power stroke. Pull the valve cover, when on the power stroke, as the piston is moving upwards the intake valve will be opening, then closes. When piston is TDC and moves down from power stroke the intake valve is closed but when it returns back to TDC again the exhaust valve is opening then closes as piston goes down, then repeats. Put it at TDC, watch the valves, and have that spark plug pulled to verify it has reached the highest point up with either pluging with finger to feel compression push on your finger or use something like a small plastic stiff rod that fits but pay close attention doing this as you likely will not be able to see anything with your eyes, all by feel. Take the distributor slide it down into motor slowly while turning it side to side until you feel it drop in place, put bolt in but do not tighten up all the way, by looking at the distributor with rotor button installed and after noting which position the rotor button should be pointed if cap was installed and pointed to plug wire spot number one piston, make a mark to guide you then remove cap, turn the distributor as close as possible so that rotor button is pointed at mark, it should be close enough now to crank up, so now use a timing light to see timing marks on crank and case of front motor and then turn the distributor in each direction until you figure out which way you turn it to get the mark on pulley to line up with notch on motor. Tighten up the distributor bolt.
