Door won’t lock but alarm sets

Asked by KCDOY Aug 14, 2019 at 07:59 AM about the 2012 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport ES

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

When I lock my car the door doesn’t actually
lock, it only sets the alarm. Anyone can walk
up to my car, and open the door. The alarm
WILL go off, but the door is already open for
them to grab my stuff and run. Why doesn’t it
actually lock the door? And key fob near or
far, it makes no difference.

You can try this to see if it is a lost connection between the fob and the car's computer system. With the car off, open the driver's side door. Hold down the lock button for 4 seconds, the hold down the unlock button for 2 seconds (at the same time). Then release the lock button, then the unlock button. That will reprogram the fob. If that fails, look in the passenger fuse box, it should be a 20 amp fuse and see if it is blown. If that is fine, then it is probably the door lock actuator which needs to be replaced.
