Shift Position Switch

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My Shifter would not move to park, it seemed that the mechanism to unlock shifter was not working. Looked up online and it said most likely the soleniod/actuator was not working properly- took it to nissan dealer and they wanted to replace the entire shift assembly for $800 Plus labor. Took it to a mechanic shop and they replaced the shift position switch - at $250 which fixed the issue. HOWEVER - now about 20% of the time i hear the click of the soleniod going of when i am in reverse and touch the brake. Any thoughts? mechanic said it was "normal" - translation "i dont want to deal with it"

When you hit the brake it does unlock the solenoid so you can place it up into park.. try to set the parking brake and go from reverse to park without using ur brake, u shouldnt be able to

@Ed9262 - Thanks! this is most likely it, unfortunately the mechanic was pushing back and did not want to deal with it. I will try to take it back tomorrow. Do you see any issue if left alone?

Hitting the brake should only activate the solenoid when the gearshift is in the park position. The most common failure on the Nissan Altima shifter is not the solenoid failing, but the park position switch. The metal tab on it gets bent over time from being pressed down too hard and eventually stops closing the contact. A cheap fix some mechanics will do is to simply bypass the park position switch. Now the solenoid will activate every time you step on the brake which will eventually cause the solenoid to fail earlier than it should have, thanks to the constant cycling. You can find a replacement switch kit on Amazon and other places from Latchwell that provides both of the switches for the shifter, reverse position and parked position, with harnesses and OEM compatible plugs. $50 plus your labor.
