Does a person just pry off the panel of the rear hatch, or what holds it in place?

It is held on by small plastic clips. You can use a plastic trim panel tool to pop it loose or a small screwdriver, be careful not to break them. Once you have part of the panel loose you can use your hands to pop the rest of it loose by pulling on it. Check for any screws first, if you don't remove any screws that might be helping to hold it in place then you could break the panel.
