2012 Avalon Limited JBL Synthesis Navigation Screen Backlight

Asked by JCarval14 Jul 06, 2017 at 02:48 PM about the 2012 Toyota Avalon Limited

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I hope someone could offer me some guidance. I own a 2012 Toyota
Avalon Limited. Last week while driving my screen went dark. The radio
functions still worked but the screen was totally dark. I tried turning the
display on and off to no avail. At that time I noticed that it still beeped when
I touched the screen. So I know the radio and screen are still working.
Then I noticed when the sunlight hit the screen, you can faintly see the
display. So the screen is on but dark. It's almost as if the back light in the
screen is out. If I flash my flashlight at it, I can faintly see everything on the
screen. Any idea what could've happened or experience something
similar? I'm looking for any advice before I have to fork over a ton of cash
at the dealership. Thank you!

Same problem. I have not found a good answer. Buying used units is a no win gamble. Toyota dealers offer a refurbished for $2000+. Supposedly, Toyota have the units refurnished by through their repair network. It is hard to get a good explanation of the warranty expectations on the refurbished units. Obviously, this product failure rate is very high. Unfortunately, Toyota is not stepping up to their responsibility for what appears to be caused by a basic product quality and engineering defect. Automotive electronic applications have increased to a level that make them critical/essential to vehicle operation and they come at a high consumer cost. The buyers reasonable useful life expectation of them is much higher than the manufacturer's reliability. Something to consider when buying a new and/or used car.
