Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My sebring convert. tranny will not go into gear unless the engine rpm's are up very high. once it goes into gear, it will not stay into gear for very long. Also there is a noise coming from the drivers side of the engine compartment. I know this is vague, but I need a place to start looking. Thanks!

Start by checking the level of oil in the tranny. You might have a very low level and the oil presure is not enoigh to move the gears this might also explain the noise.

Thanks, but the trans fluid level is where it's supposed be. Any more ideas from anyone?

If your oil level is ok then the other possibility would be a worn torque converter or the inner impeller.

Thanks for your input. The car has 135,000 + on it. The engine runs really good, but the trans is kaput.I guess that it will take a rebuild to cure my problem. Thanks for your answer!

Usually the noise is because the main pressure valve is stuck dumping all the pressure the pump makes. its sticks because something failed inside the trans

The noise that I hear sounds a lot like the alternator belt whining, but it's on the drivers side of the car.
