How to correct a high idle

Asked by pbryant107 Feb 26, 2017 at 07:13 PM about the 2001 Chrysler Sebring Limited Convertible FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2001 Sebring convertable 2.7l.  Finally fixed a fuel injector/fuel rail problem and when I started the car the rpms went to 3000.  Cleaned the throttle position sensor and it came down a bit.  Drops when put in gear, but idles at 2500 rpm.  Any suggestions?

Have it scanned for any trouble codes and write them down. Could still have something to do with the throttle positioning sensor, or there could be a vacuum leak.

It sounds like you may have a bad vacuum leak. The high engine speed would be due to the computer trying to keep the engine from stalling by increasing the fuel to match the air coming in. I would carefully check any gaskets, o-rings, etc. that may have been disturbed or removed when you fixed the fuel injection system. Try taking a spray bottle with water and spraying around the injectors and intake manifold area while the engine is running. If the engine speed changes or you hear a sucking sound, the area you just sprayed would be the place to look. Good luck!
