What tire circumference difference would possibly initiate the advancetrac?

Asked by gettofrance Dec 14, 2017 at 08:15 AM about the 2007 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer V8 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I replaced the tire in kind due to tire damage. The other 3 were at 90% tread
life. The tech said there was 1 inch difference. I am NOT getting any indicator
that the advancedtrac is activated but my MPG is suffering and I'm getting
noise in the front like the transfer case is active. Will I have to replace the other
3 tires.

No way that should happen ,,, of course if you put a 14" tire on a car that has 15" tires on the other wheels you may experience problems. Sounds like someone trying to sell you 3 more tires ... never ask a tire jockey for engine help .. take the car and get it serviced somewhere that doesn't sell tires as a primary business

Read your owners manual for tire size information. I don't know if your system can handle that much difference or not.

The Ford dealership said i needed the tires. I would think i would get the indicator if the advancetrac is working. I'm not. The Ford Tech indicated I could only have 3/8 difference on the circumference which adds up to about .06 or less than 1/16 on tread depth difference. I

I did ask why i wasn't getting the indicator. They said it doesn't indicate all the time. Im like say what?

Lets take 3/4" or ,750 thousands as a standard brand new tread now lets take 90% tread on the existing 3 tires and subtract to find the difference in Thousands .750 x .90% = .675 (in thousands) ,,,,, .750 - .675 = .075 or 1/10" so how does 1/10" x 2 (diameter =2x difference) or 1/5" = anywhere near .500 thousands (or 1/2 ") ? Man .. if that were true almost every car over a year old would experience problems

BTW ,, you said 3/8" circumference but Goodyear rates 3% to 5% as acceptable so lets do circumference or D x 3.414 (pi).. on a brand new 15" tire we get a circumference of 51.210 - 50.698 = .515 Now take the circumference of brand new 15" tire is 51.210 and we find that 3% allowable circumference difference of = 1.5363. Since we have already determined the actual difference between new and existing is .515 and we are allowed 1.5363 it's obvious that your well under whats allowed ... actually your less than a 1/3 the max 3% Goodyear says is acceptable I would tell Ford to put in writing ,, then do the math

good math. but ford had a bad design with the advancedtrac. again all tires need to be replaced for that poorly engineered system to work properly.
