2012 chevy colorado no reverse

Asked by Jordon Mar 27, 2018 at 02:51 PM about the 2012 Chevrolet Colorado 1LT Crew Cab 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2012 chevy colorado crew cab 4wd. I got it
hung up a few months back and was a little rough
shifting it back and forth between drive and
reverse to get it out. Afterwards I had several lights
and fault messages being traction control, service
stabilizer system, and abs. I drove it up and down
the road a bit and all the faults went away. Last
week I drove through a muddy field in 4wd and
didn't get stuck but spun the tires some,
afterwards the same alarms came back. This time
they didn't go away but I still drove it to work and
back. On my way home a couple nights ago I
stopped at my neighbors and when I left I backed
out and was a little aggressive taking off,
afterwards once I shut truck off and started it later
I had issues. The truck has no reverse I pit it in
reverse and don't really feel it engage and when
revving up nothing happens, when I shift to neutral
it acts like it's in 3rd and drives, when in drive it
goes through the gears as it should, and 3, 2, and 1
also drive as they should but nowhere can I find
reverse. I will say my fluid was low but after
refilling it nothing changes, if anyone has any
knowledge on this help is appreciated.

Alot of times if the trans does not start to slip in forward gears when going out they tend loose reverse then start loosing the forward gears but Have the trans computer module read for codes at dealership or trans shop to determine any other possible reasons. The trans control module is separate from the main engine computer and takes a different scanner that can read it. Only a professional shop or dealership will have this scanner you need to read the transmission codes.

Had trans scanned and came back with no codes on it and the lights were caused by a front wheel hub not showing any movement when driving

Check to make sure all the electrical connection to the transmission are good & clean, not pulled loose, may should use some electronic board contact cleaner sprayed in to clean the out and add in some dielectric grease to coat the inside connection points, check linkages for damage and removed any excessive mud that may hinder operation. If all those mentioned are fine and Neutral Safety Switch / Range Sensor checks out good ,then you will need to at least open up the transmission pan to test and service the solenoids if those are fine, pull the transmission out and take to a professional to diagnose and locate the internal damage or failed part, not a standard rebuild but may be best to have it also rebuilt while out.

Reverse acts like neutral, the linkage all looked good next chance I'm off I'm going to try to get it cleaned up some and start checking the wiring hoping it's not an expensive fix. Is there a way to test the TCM to see if it's bad, I feel like it's a computer issue. Does that sound logical?

Other than using a known good one for reference, it would have to be sent off for repairs or replaced, unless you can see damage.

So I wound up pulling the trans and taking it apart since I'd had several mechanics say it was internal. Found the low reverse backing plate was warped badly and most the clutches were burnt up, in the process of replacing them and hopefully fix the issue.

After replacing the clutches and getting everything back together the problem was solved. Runs as good as new thanks for the help

so am I. please treat your vehicle like you would want yourself too be treated. I have a 1976 Trans Am that I've owned since 1978. It's an easier vehicle to work on and through the years of having beaters in Minnesota winters, your vehicle will only put out compared to the care you give it. john

Ok my husband has a 2007 Chevy Colorado and he can’t get it out of park. How can we fix this

Jordan I have a 07 Colorado that's doing the same thing. I'm having trouble locating the parts using your description. Can you help please?
