When you fill the gas tank don't be topping it off. You need to stop filling when the gas pump nozzle clicks off the first time. Otherwise the fuel gets into the EVAP system, and could be throwing a code to make the check engine light to come on.

Just have to have the vehicle scanned for codes to know what the cause for the check engine light to be coming on.

It is often the poor design of the capless gas fill neck, or a failing gas cap. I have a 2012 Focus and my check engine light came on for the first time today. After some research online I learned that the design of the capless system is much like a funnel, with the locking fill valve 2 inches down the neck. Dirt gets in (while filling) and causes vapour leakage as it prevents an airtight seal, and the EVAP system throws an error code causing check engine light to come on. You can replace the filler valve assembly or attempt to clean it like I did. First blow any dirt out of fill neck. I used two screwdrivers to gently depress the two locking tabs on the inside of fill neck which allowed me to get the fill valve open. Keeping it open I sprayed a little WD-40 into neck and valve then (without letting it close) wrapped my finger in a rag and carefully wiped the residue away inside of valve seat and neck, and the face of the valve itself. Be careful you don’t get your finger stuck. Lol I could feel the rubber seal and focused on that the most. It was dirty. Afterwards I used the little funnel that comes with the car to open and close the valve repeatedly. When I checked the car the check engine light was still on. Disconnected the battery but apparently not long enough as it was still on so finally I tried one persons tip that I had read; he said to turn the ignition ON, for about a second (don’t start it), then off, for a second, and repeat three times. I did this, and it worked. Light is off, valve is cleaned. Time will tell. Hope this may help another. Sorry about the wordiness. Haha
