Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Picked up a 2011 Altima for my Daughter 11/18. Car drives nice, 88,800 miles. After the 1st week the check engine light came on, called for a code P0101 MAF sensor, replaced that with new and 2 days later the light is back on. Then I went to work after reading some of the forums. Replaced the rubber boot and both hoses. Replaced PCV valve, replaced air filter, cleaned throttle body and then another new MAF sensor and took it to Nissan for them to reprogram the ECU for the new MAF. Driving home bout 10 minutes down the road and the check engine light came on. I shut the code off for the 100th time, it`s good for about 65 miles and then kicks on again. Nissan`s response, oh, you need a new MAF sensor. DUH! I`m now looking for a MAF sensor wiring harness thinking it`s maybe a short in one of the wires. Has to be, I did everything over leading to that area. The thing is Nissan sells the MAF wiring harness as a whole, yes the MAF sensor ties into the whole engine wiring harness at a cost of $500 without the labor. Any body have any idea`s. My Daughter is in tears as she has 5 years to pay on this car. I should have done my homework first.

If she uses the 87 octane gas all the time start using the 89 or higher octane gas had same problem and that took care of the problem.

She will start with the higher octane as of today, I hope it can be something simple as better fuel. Of course Nissan would not tell you these things. A few weeks ago they charged me $112 to reprogram the ECU for the new MAF sensor and turn off the light, 10 minutes down the light was back on. Waste of money! As far as lack of voltage to the MAF sensor, could this be caused by a cheap battery? That`s is what is in the car now, never heard of the make before. I did tell my Daughter next payday to buy herself a name brand battery that comes with a warranty. I replaced 2 hoses that were dry rotted, I`ll have to dig deeper into the engine and see if there is a possible vacuum leak. Thank you for your answers, very kind of you. I hope the day when that check engine light stays off!

A "West Nile Virus" was the cause of idle surging and 2,500 RPM rev limit. This is crazy for what I found...it was a deformed air filter which allowed a bypass of airflow which lead to a Mosquito stuck inside of the MAF sensor. I cleaned the MAF and the throttle body with the proper chemicals, but the symptoms got worse. I disconnected the battery for a few minutes and that didn't work but somehow maybe it did. I shut off the engine and restarted it...BAM, it runs great!

Was reading some posts on different site for this code one thing I saw mentioned that I haven't seen here is restricted catalytic converter. I guess you have to check the back-pressure in the exhaust to determine this but I'm not quite sure how it's done on an Altima.

Have the same problem my dad took it to the dealer and charged me 520 dollars to do a ECU reprogram and cleaning injectors/maf. Light came back on took it back today and they changed the maf that I did 3 times already. Someone please help or I’m about to sue Nissan for this LEMON!!

Dear Sir, I experienced with the same problem; because the shop could not fix it they contacted Nissan Tech Support. Nissan informed the shop that their was an update that need to be apply to the car computer system and only Nissan dealer could apply the update. Scheduled an appointment with Nissan and they check it out and applied the computer system update. Everything was good afterward. Because this is not an safety issue NHS do not require Nissan to report this issue but it is record on the nissan site.
