Brakes

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Suddenly had to press brakes almost all
the way to the floor to slow the car down.
The car skidded some before could let the
brakes off. The next day the brakes worked
normal.  What is going on with the brakes?

Check brake fluid, if very low, possible low brake pads or a leaky wheel caliper or bad master cylinder. Check for leaks. If brake fluid near full, check master cylinder. Good luck.

I have the same vehicle and it has been doing the same thing. I have taken it to the repair shop, and they told me that there is an issue with something in the breaks sticking, but GM won't fix it until you can "verify" it through a reputable repair shop. It doesn't happen all of the time, so I dont know how you can verify it. If you have found an answer to this nonsense, please let me know.

Did you all ever get an answer to this? My 2011 SRX my brakes go all the way to th floor. We just got new pads and rotors. It does not do this all the time. It has a mind of its own sometimes! A little scary when you need brakes and they all of a sudden aren't there! If this is such a widespread problem, why does GM not recall whatever is causing it! This is very dangerous! Where do people post the solutions to these kind of issues?

It makes no sense to be low brake fluid... why would it work fine, then randomly not work, then work fine. Mine will go many months of working perfectly, then all of a sudden it goes to the floor for no reason at all! This does not sound like just low fluid. A mechanic friend said he thought it was something in the electronics that needs calibrated after changing pads. This started happening after changing pads and front rotors. I never called cadillac to see if there was something that can be plugged in to the ECM to calibrate the brake system.

Same random brakes to floor to stop problem with Cadillac SRX 2011. Pedal replaced, fluid flushed...still does this randomly. Caddy mechanics say they cannot duplicate it so they cannot fix it after charging me two grand for the mentioned work. Called GM and had lots of “sorry” and given a case number. Am told to wait for a regional engineer with whom they cannot give me an appointment date b/c he is so busy. From reading complaints online, they have had this problem for years with multiple year srx cars. Not happy with Cadillac!

My 2012 SRX was doing the exact same thing. Suddenly brakes went to the floor. Had to pump them to stop my vehicle. Took it into the Cadillac dealership, they changed the brake master cylinder and problem was fixed. My brakes work just fine now. Hope this helps.

I have a 2011 srx with the same problem the brakes fail if the car slides on ice or wet roads or if the tires spin when taking off. Started shutting off the traction control and have not had a problem the only pain in the ass is you have to shut off the traction control every time you start the car.

I have a 2010 Cadillac SRX and today, brakes started slipping after the traction control sensor came on. This was causing my acceleration to fade out as the vehicle thought I had no traction. Turned the traction sensor off, which in turn fixed the acceleration problem but brakes still slipping. I know that there is no issue with my brakes as I just had work done on them within the last two months. Must be a sensor issue. Will be bringing it to dealership soon and will get back to everyone.

Did you find the issue and was it fixed? My wife says this just happened on her 2012 srx. Concerned. Any info you can provide would be appreciated. Thx.

I found an answer on another thread. Post claimed that independent mechanic told him that if valve hang open on ABS module it would cause that exact symptom. Makes perfect sense since the ABS system works by opening and closing valves for pressure on the brakes. I had the same symptoms and just took my car to the GM dealer and didn't argue with him, I just told him I want the ABS module replaced.

Same issue on 2012 SRX. It happened again AFTER having master cylinder replaced. Seems to happen when driving over uneven pavement like a bump in the road and I press on brakes suddenly. Brakes go all the way down. Have to pump an pump to stop. Also a issue when I have an auto insurance tracker that counts against me for hard-braking. From reading these posts, I will go for ABS Module replacement. Even with this issue, I am told to by the dealership service folks to hang onto this car - it's a good one. The newer Cadillacs are having issues with the expensive displays going out. Thanks everyone.

A.B.S. Module has air in it. Shuttering while engaged can cause air to pocket in chambers of the A.B.S. Module from fluid boil. As fluid ages it loses viscosity and the boiling point changes. This intern traps air in the fluid. This condition is even worse in cold weather. Have a QUALIFIED Technician only with a ABS bleed procedure in hand to change the fluid and bleed the A.B.S.. Worse case the Master cylinder & Module replacement then bleed. GOOD LUCK!

"klarue1 answered about a year ago Same issue on 2012 SRX. It happened again AFTER having master cylinder replaced. Same cause, bumps on the road causes the brake pedal to go down. I have to pump it, park it, turn the car off and wait a while to come back to normal. THIS IS A SERIOUS ISSUE. GM MUST BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE !
