2007 F-150 (5.4 V8 125,00mi)

At low revs (1000-2000 rpm) the engine seems to balk while going up slight
grades. It stops when you give it more power. Am I wrong to think it could be
the transmission?

I doubt it is the transmission. Your engine may have a miss. Have you ever tuned up the engine? Miles on the truck? Is the Check Engine Light on?
