2007 Ford F-150 5.4l V6 Engine Question

Asked by CPMcB Jun 09, 2019 at 07:30 AM about the 2007 Ford F-150 Lariat SuperCab

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Can you guys give me some advice?

I have a 2007 Lariat 5.4l v6 with 210,000
miles. I change the plugs are about 110, and
I’ve had zero problems with it up until this
week.

So I started noticing a lack of power between
45 and 60 mph. It was intermittent and I was
wondering what the issue might be. Maybe
transmission? Then it started running rough
at low idle.

So I take it into the shop and they say no
codes, but it’s a cam phaser problem.
Suggest full engine replacement at $9400.
Waymore than the truck is actually worth. I
was driving it around to get a second opinion
from a friend of mine. Then it started making
a loud noise at low idle… Sounds like a
diesel truck. That loud sound goes away
when I rev the engine. Then it gave me an
error code. P0012 Camshaft position timing
over retarded bank.

So, I’m wondering what to do next.
Obviously I’m not going to pay that kind of
money to fix replace the engine. Should I find
somebody to work on it and replace the cam
phasers? The shop That I took it to would not
do that, they just couldn’t guarantee it would
work well.

Will it damage it to continue to drive it? If you
were in this position, what would you do?

9400 sounds extreme, very extreme. Call around first for the price of an engine replacement. Call several Ford dealerships as prices vary widely.
