Problems After Timing Belt

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Replaced timing belt at 102k in 12/18.  A month later lost power to car and had
it towed to dealership.  The dealership who performed the timing belt change,
state the timing belt was fine but the problem was the cylinder 4 was stuck
open.  Looking further into the engine they found the cylinder was damaged
due to the valve dropping.  To fix the damage they need to replace cylinder
heads.  Could this issue have been because the timing belt was not installed
correctly?

Most likely not related to the belt replacement. Some Subarus had issues with valves and dropping valve guides. ED is off base with his misleading answer. Do some googling for dropped exhaust vale guides on Subarus.

Thanks for the quick response. If it is not related to the belt, would the valves dropping cause the cylinder to stay open? I believe this is the code they produced.

Cylinders do not stay open, valves do. A dropped valve or valve guide will result in no compression in that cylinder.

Actually I have a question. So a friend has a 00 subaru legacy GT .. Long story short.. He get home from work .shut car down . nothing is wrong to his, knolage. Till morning he go to start it it won't. So he cracks and cranks it over . Till the bat is dead . my question is besides the timing belt. I imagine came off or shredded the rest of the way right at first turn. That morning . So ok off I correct the timing. .. Do the belts .think I'm waiting my time. Or
