I have a 2004 325i that needs the alternator replaced.  What make and model
alternator do I use?

I would think that any E36 chassis alternator should do the job. Look at OEM alternatives such as Mahle whom is a OEM supplier to BMW. Fraction of the cost of going to the dealership parts counter.
