Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My car is a 2000 bmw 328i. I replaced motor, in all that was going on, the
shop lost my Original ecu. I was forced to get a EWS from a donor car.  A
bmw 323ci. it worked and finely i was able to start car. However when I
finally got ready for test drive, the transmission failed to engage itself in Drive
or Reverse. I've tried many things to get my transmission to engage. From
fluid to trans filter to letting car run for a long time, I removed the top hose
that goes to transmission while car was running but nothing seemed to work.
Trans was working very Awesome til after ews and new motor was installed.
Im being very patient but I have to pay my bills this week. So im wont have
no cash till next week, so a shop does not work for me. Plus I cant afford
what BMW wants

I am guessing the new ECU is not compatible with your transmission. Why can't you make the shop buy you a correct ECU?

Ok here's the deal. I bought the donor car to make my car start. I was told or read the ews kit must be from a 1999 to 2000 bmw 3 series. the 323ci has everything my car has, the tranny is a GM trans like the trans I have in my car. the only other available transmission would have been a ZF, I stirred clear of that transmission. Also the EWS kit had to have Transponder, ignition , EWS, and computer. It worked. Except the first test drive would never happen. I tried the trans TCU from the 323ci and it did not work either. So im stumped. Is there anything I can do to program computer using INPA and a cable to ODB? Thank you for getting back to me. Im 55 and dont have a real income. I bought the car when I had some money after my Bro passed so im doing this car on a slim budget. It took hell to get to were I am but at least the motor hell that I went through is done. I never expected trans to not work since it worked before the engine went out.

I wish you luck but my limited knowledge of ECU's is that you need the exact part number ECU for your engine/transmission combo. Transmissions may be the same nominal part but there are differences from year to year and from model to model which can make them incompatible. Maybe a reflash to the correct operating program for your car can help, maybe. Mixing and matching random parts is only going to waste time and money as you are finding out.
