Loud Intake Sound

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

The past couple of months my car for some reason my intake makes a very
loud humming sound I would describe it as if I'm going a constant speed
such as 40,45, 55 and such.  I know it makers a low humming sound when I
accelerate but this is a very loud sound.  When I start my car from a cold
start RPMs will shoot to around 2,500 go back down to around 1k then right
back up to 2.5k and then drop and somtimes the engine will surge and that
loud humming will go in and out with the surging of the engine.  I've talked to
different mechanically inclined friends and they have no idea what's going
on.  I do have a K&N cold air intake installed on the vehicle with a fresh filter
on it the old one was damaged rubbing against the bottom splash guard.  I
recently replaced the fuel filter, spark plugs, changed the oil, changed the
suspension, also replaced the IAC, TPS, MAF, and cleaned the throttle body
and the EGR valve.  I know when I slow down coming to a stop the engine
will feel like it's about to turn off and the lights dim which would mean the
alternator.  Would that have any effect on the cold air intake being so loud
when I'm just driving down the road?  I'll supply any other information I need
to as I don't know what else to do besides to try and find a mechanic that can
actually help me.

I had a similar problem on my 2005 ZX5. While standing in front of the car, get a flashlight and look between the right-most intake runner and the runner to it's left. There is a large PCV vacuum hose underneath the intake manifold that is notorious for cracking. I ignored the RPM surge problem until the symptoms got progressively worse -- eventually, you'll start hearing a loud hiss from under the hood (it's a massive vacuum leak) and the car's power will start to suffer. Mine got so bad that I could press the accelerator pedal to the floor and it would slowly pull away from a dead stop. Removed the intake manifold this weekend and replaced the vacuum hose. Idles normally now and power restored. P.S. While you've got the intake manifold off, check the condition of the intake runner control flaps; apparently they're also notorious for breaking off and getting sucked into your engine. Mine were ok, just dirty.

I was able to replace my PCV hose today and it was split pretty bad. After replacing it and letting my car warm up the intake made a similar roaring sound but it was more constant. I then got a check engine light and I have a scan tool which gave me 2 codes p0106 and p0068. I have no idea what it could be and after this ordeal I feel like I'm slowly losing my mind.

I HAVE A 2007 FORD FOCUS 1.6SI AND I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM BUT I TOOK OUT THE ENTIRE INTAKE MANIFOLD WITH THE THROTTLE BODY AND CLEANED IT VERY WELL SEALED ALL THE GASKETS AND WHEN I PUT IT BACK THE HUMMING SOUND STILL CONTINUES.
