Excessive Oil Consumption

Asked by Keito107 Nov 24, 2017 at 03:18 PM about the 2010 Subaru Forester 2.5 X Premium

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I purchased a 2010 Subaru Forester (5 speed manual -91k mileage) in May
of 2017.  When I changed the oil in August - the service station said it was
down at least a quart plus.  Same thing last week when I changed it out for
the 2nd time.  In fact - the day  I got it changed,  my oil light flickered in 1st
gear.

Reading online that this is a known  issue but trying to gauge how serious it
is long term.  I can obviously check it more frequently and add oil if needed
but just wondering if I should ditch it or just deal.  It runs fine otherwise.

Appreciate any advice!

Yes it is known issue. What oil spec are you using, 0w or 5w first number? I would try using a thicker oil.

Not really a "known" issue for the EJ25 engine. The later FB25 engine is the oil burner. Oil consumption is measured in miles per quart, not in months. Since you do no say how many miles it took to use a quart there is no way to know if this is excessive or not. Given that you car is old and may have high miles this may or may not be excessive.

Check the oil level every time you gas it up and keep a quart with you in the car.

Uhh, you need to periodically check the oil level between oil changes.

FOR is again correct. The earlier EJ25 motor does NOT have an oil control piston ring issue, but rarely there are problems with valve seals. Definitely use 10w40 oil and add a bottle of "seal conditioner" additive and see if consumption abates.
