Is the key not turning? Does the engine need t crank or does it crank and not start, which?

Yes, the key turns, engine does not start, but I can hear it click., I have to keep putting key in and out of ignition, then push it hard, sometimes starts in 5 minutes, this morning, after 15 min. Nothing. A mechanic suggested I try this locksmith as it could be security system might not be picking up chip

If you can hear a click from the vicinity of the starter, try this have someone hold the switch in the start position as you tap on the starter with a hammer if it starts replace the starter.

I have the same problem with my 2010 Ford Escape the mechanic said the last owner had been in and they had tried for 5 hours to solve the problem but had not been able to find out what was wrong. I was thinking of buying a remote auto start in hoping it would solve the problem. When I try to start it it doesn't engage it acts like it's going to start but doesn't sometimes if I push the key in it will start. A couple of times it has been like metal on metal when I turn the key and does not start. I phoned Ford and they were no help but I have seen a lot of postings with people having this problem suggesting that the whole ignition needs to be changed which would cost a lot of money. If anyone has any idea of whether remote starter would solve this problem please let me know. Winter is coming. Thank you Mary

Meribeth. Those noise you hear is the starter drive not engaging the ring gear, I would replace the starter first before you ruin the ring gear. A remote start will do the same thing except you won't hear the noise as the remote kills your battery.

I recently bought a 2011 Ford Escape, that will not crank til after 5 seconds. I spoke with Ford, they said the seat belt lights has to go off before it will crank. I've noticed after the Chime I can crank it, and sometimes if I push the brake in, it will start. SO there is that.

where is the starter? It seems buried? I cannot locate it to tap it with a hammer easily.
