2010 Corolla LE transmission whine

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Hi,

I recently purchased a new 2010 Toyota Corolla LE auto and I really like it. I have about 2000 miles on it now and just recently noticed a faint gear whine coming from the transmission at around 60 mph. You can only hear it when the radio is off and you really listen for it during the acceleration. It only does it when transmission fluid is fully warmed up after driving for about 15 miles. 2010 corolla uses U341E transmission that specifies Toyota WS transmission fluid. I noticed that 2001 – 2005 Supra uses the same transmission but it requires T-IV fluid which has more viscosity than WS. I wonder if anybody else here noticed this faint gear whine on this car or do I need to take it to the dealer. My other car 2003 Toyota Echo uses U340E transmission and it has gear whine as well, except it is more pronounced than in Corolla, so I an trying to fugure out if this is normal for this transmission or not.

Thank you!

They're both cheap cars that don't put out much power, so they probably use gears that are less beveled than those in the Supra, which is a nicer car that puts out much more power, which requires stronger gears.

Update - went to toyota dealer today and test drove exactly the same corolla LE except it was Canada-built, and mine was built in Japan. The one I drove was brand-new with only 10 miles. Surprisingly, once the tranny warmed up, I heard exactly the same faint whine at 60 mph, so now I wonder that this is characteristic for U341E tranny. Please try yours and let me know...

Most Corollas are built in Fremont Ca. They do not ship Corollas from Japan to here.

My wife drives a 2007 Corolla Levin SX and it whines at most speeds, however loudest at 100/110 klm,I have had it to Toyota and the service manager said its normal in the Corolla and that my wifes was not as bad as some. This experience has turned me off Toyota, there are no whines in my old 2001 Holden V8.
