Wrong gas??

Asked by GuruXM3J1 Dec 06, 2018 at 08:27 AM about the 2009 BMW 5 Series 535i Sedan RWD

Question type: General

My teen put in 87 in my 2009 bmw and within
100 miles it started idling poorly. Especially at
low or no speeds. She did this once before
and the exact thing happened. but I thought
it was a coincidence and it ended up needed
coil pack replacement. Maybe I didn’t need
to do that. Does bad gas or wrong octane
gas cause those coils to go bad. Or is there s
suggestion of adding a simple additive or
something that might not be a huge repair
and burn thru this gas. I’m at a quarter tank.

Gas can't possibly affect the coils. Try adding a gas treatment and top off with the premium stuff. The engine computer was probably relearning idle speed with the lower octane gas. Wouldn't hurt to look over the engine and clean or replace filters and sensors.

Thank u so much. Good to know about the coils. I will take your suggestion. Clearly I know nothing about cars or this app. I didn’t see the first 2 posts show up.
