why is my turbo making a loud "blowing" noise when i accelerate?

i have the original  2.3L, 4 cylinder turbo engine from the factory.  i starts and runs fine but when it is calling for the turbo to open, (when i accelerate), it is  losing power and i can hear a loud noise, like air blowing in the engine compartment.
