Burning Rubber, white smoke only on incline

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

We just bought a 2008 Subaru Forester, had it checked out at the mechanic
prior to purchase. He said it was in good condition aside from a small power
steering fluid leak. Now, after a couple of weeks, we've started to notice a
slight burning rubber smell. The last two times this has been accompanied
by white smoke from the left side of the engine. We noticed that this only
happens after going uphill, otherwise it drives fine. We took it to a mechanic
who said it's the head gasket. When we asked about the power steering fluid
he said no he didn't notice anything. So now we don't really know what to do.
We don't have the money to get a head gasket replaced if it's not necessary.
Any advice?

Sounds like a leaking head gasket. Was this a Subaru mechanic or someone with no Subaru experience?

Thanks for the response. It was a regular mechanic. We called up the local Subaru right after and they said it would cost around $6,000 to fix it, which is more than we paid for the car and a lot more than we have right now. So a Subaru dealer isn't an option for us right now.

Dealers are such a rip off. Find a shop that specializes in Subies if you can. Make sure they check the heads for cracks and for warp and that they use the latest multi layer head gaskets. Do the timing belt at the same time as there should be no extra charge except for the belt which is cheap.

Have another local garage replace it, it should be around $2500 to $3000.

Thanks for your help guys, I'll look for a Subaru specialist and see what we can find.
