2008 Subaru Legacy Timing Belt Replacement

Asked by GuruTY5PS Jun 15, 2018 at 06:31 PM about the 2008 Subaru Legacy 2.5i Special Edition AWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I understand from my dealer that the timing belt on a 2008 Subaru Legacy should be replaced at 105K miles, but they also said it should be replaced at 7 or 8 years.  Mine has only 47K miles on it and is garage kept.  Should I replace it?  Said it was only $450.  Are there other parts that should be replaced at the same time?  Prices I see online are much higher for this replacement.

Probably a bit early, but it's easy to check: find your 10mm small wrench or socket and remove the upper, outer left side (driver!) bolt securing the front plastic cover over the outer end of the motor. This will allow you to pry the plastic cover back an inch or so with your fingers, providing a nice view down into the t-belt space. You're looking for cross- cuts across the running belt. With a flashlight look deeper to see the nice teeth on the lower run. Poke the belt down with your finger to feel its resistance and tensioner action. If all is dry and clean, secure the cover and check again in a year...regardless of mileage, as age cracks the belt after 10-12 years. You'll probably find yours to be ok. If you DO eventually replace it check the idler and tensioner pulleys too, but forget replacing the ultradurable water pump to save $100. Should be a $400-500 job. The 105k/9yr service suggestion is just a suggestion; but the more important indicator is time. If your belt is ok I'd just wait until you need HGs, as replacing the t-belt is part of that $1500 job. (Indeed, are your gaskets dry?)
