2007 ram 1500 5.7 engine died and will not restart

Asked by DOgMeat Jan 30, 2015 at 08:53 AM about the 2007 Dodge RAM 1500 Laramie Quad Cab RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

started my truck this morning "remote start" started fine was running. Got in and put key in ignition and turn to on position. Then the engine died. Tried to restart and nothing but a click. Lights are on all.. seems fine. Charged battery " did some strange things" went from 8 volts to 14 but took a good few seconds, amps dropped like normal indicating a full chage. Turn charger to Jump/start and still nothing, just a click. I have had the common dirty connector deal, cleaned them and battery.
Any ideas what this may be?

A faulty starter shouldn't kill your engine once running. Sounds like an electrical issue. Have you tried starting with the remote rather than the key since it died? Try the remote start again. Post back with results.

I will post back tonight when I get home. I figured the starter should not kill the engine.. Not stat yes. ALso I have heard of the security system doing wild things..

Just to add.. I have thought that it may bee my battery due to the crazy way it too the charge. Could 1 cell bad cause the truck not to start? Again I have heard the newer models will not start if they sense low voltage/amps.. true or not I have no idea.. Thanks all more to follow. Dog out ..

A dead or dry cell would be a problem. Batteries decrease in voltage every year. If over 5 years old, I would replace the battery. Also check you cables for corrosion. Sometimes the corrosion will creep up inside the cables under the protective coating. Security systems always seem to be more problems than they're worth. It may have malfunctioned and disabled you ignition.

Ok, check battery with hydro tester and found 2 cells very low. Installed mew battery and Poof all is good. Even tho the battery tester at the parts store and my tester showed good. I guees just enough life to register good. but the hydro tester showed otherwise. Thanks for the help !

You're welcome! Yeah, I've been burned by those battery load testers before. They say the battery is good when it's not. I replaced a starter before because of that. After I replaced it, still had a no start. Was just the battery the entire time.....
