What might be wrong when a 2001 BMW X5
kinda jerks when going up a hill?

The service engine soon light came on yesterday. My husband googled it and we think it may have been because the downhill stabilization mode was on. We turned it off but I've not had the chance to drive it yet. Does that sound like it may be the answer?
