2003 Ford Explorer Tranny

Asked by Guru22YR May 11, 2017 at 04:09 AM about the 2003 Ford Explorer XLT V6

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My tranny revs high after 1st gear than
bangs hard into 2nd gear. My OD light stays
blinking. The code is P1770 I think. Can I
have this fix without draining my pockets.
Also can I take a tranny from a 2005 or
same year and swap ? I love my truck dont
wanna get rid of it.

Unfortunately, it sounds as if the transmission is shot (the slipping of the gears). You can swap the transmission from a 2002-2006 Ford Explorer with yours, I would ensure that the donor tranny come from the same size engine (Litres) to avoid transmission loading (meaning if it comes from a 4cyl and your Explorer is a V6 the transmission will fail again as it is not programmed to handle the load/torque from the larger engine). Best of luck!

Thank for the feedback as pain as it is to hear. I love my truck but the amount to get a new tranny I could probably get another one. However I'm gonna look into the swap though.

I was experiencing the same problem with my 2003, blinking OD light and improper shift. Fortunately my problem was a solenoid malfunction which was fixed at under a hundred bucks and in less than 30 minutes. You will have to have a reputable company check. Way to many companies out there whose only solution to the problem is a new transmission or a rebuild.
