Question type: Maintenance & Repair

a family member recently broke down on the freeway in his 2007 toyota solara, his water pump pulley broke and the serpintine belt fell off and he continued trying to drive the car since he was only 20 miles away from home. so no serpintine belt means his power steering stopped working his battery was no longer being charged and the engine was no longer cooling itself and he droive it until it just died. my question is what kind of damage is he looking at? I am thinking his engine is done cause there was oil all over the underside of his hood and coolant was empty as well. i think i know the answer but would like a second opinion before starting repairs on his car

Time for a new engine. The car is probably not worth fixing.

I agree, junk it. Being overheated that badly means you probably have a warped head in addition to fried ignition system components. It will probably cost more to fix it than the vehicle is worth! Hope that helps! Jim

If it is clean and fairly low miles sell it as a mechanics special.

thanks for all the responses i told the owner of the vehicle pretty much the same, but he wants to repair it apparently he loves that car. we shall see how it goes. thanks again mechanics special? is that a thing or you just making a funny?

People sell "fixers" as a "mechanics special" meaning that a mechanic could repair it and sell it. Sentiment is hard to value. The owner could put a new engine in it and drive it for years and get their moneys worth.

Yes, mechanic's special is really an advertising term. It's usually a nice way of saying the vehicle needs a lot of work, is a project car, or isn't running. If the vehicle has sentimental value then a new or good used engine is probably the way to go. I understand about sentimental value and vehicles. My 2000 Grand Prix was my Nephew's first car. We were very close. Hope that helps! Jim
