my egine temp. light comes on , and the car shuts off . y do the car do that.

You might have an air lock in the cooling system or your headgasket has gone, or there's a possibility that your coolong fans are not working. The engine cooling temperature sensor detects rising temperature and to protect the engine it shuts it off. Check if the fabs come on and if you have enough cooling fluid.
