There's a good chance your alternator is going bad, if you can hook a voltmeter to the battery while the light is on you'll probably see it's not charging.

The only time I have ever had a check engine light was for a battery issue. Oh, I've had plenty of other issues, but no light. At the time, it was producing too many volts. It was the voltage regulator, which unfortunately was part of the PCM. Then the generator had to be replaced. I finally decided the battery might be the problem, because even when the battery was brand new it didn't feel like the car was getting enough juice. I ordered an AGM battery and I hope that solves it

Let me know how that works, usually when I see really screwy problems like this I start looking at ground wires. If the battery doesn't do it perform voltage drop tests on the engine/chassis ground.
