Ac air issue in caravan

Asked by Rteal88 Jun 19, 2018 at 07:19 AM about the 2007 Dodge Grand Caravan SXT Extended FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2007 Dodge Caravan. The AC gets
ice cold when it is working properly.
However sometimes it seams like it's stuck
on fan air or it switches to heat. I turn the AC
off and on randomly and sometimes that
works but allot it don't.  For example, I could
be going somewhere and ac works great.
Stop and shut off vehicle for awhile and
restart and ac seams like it switched to heat
it fan air. I have it set to the coldest setting
and still issues. Or sometimes could be
driving and ac work good and then all a
sudden the heat or fan air comes on. Any
advice?

I have a 2007 SXT grand caravan. AC is normally pretty good. I would start with the charge and high and low pressures. They have to be perfect. I am going from memory, but the low side should be between 25 and 45 lbs. I forget the the high. 180 comes to mind. When perfectly charged, the compressor runs very smooth. If yours is cycling on/off every 5 or 10 seconds, then they system is over or under charged. Another issue that seems to go unnoticed and might be your issue is the condenser. If it is not cooling the freon or has hot spots, that will be the cause of hot and cold air that you are feeling. Make certain it is clean and free of bugs on the exterior. A stuck expansion valve, or debris in the system will contribute to poor air. But you can detect all that by high and low pressures. Dont just charge the system with freon or leak/die unless you have a set of gauges. Harbor Freight has a nice set for about 60.
