Tapping noise after service station replaced Crankshaft Sensor

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 2006 Buick Lucerne has 110,000
miles on it.  I’ve owned it 10 years
and pampered it.  Runs good, looks
great.  It began stalling at low RPM.
Buick dealership was evidently
correct in saying that the Crankshaft
Sensor was the likely problem, as I
experienced no more stalling after
replacing with new Duralast sensor.
However, immediately thereafter I
noticed a tapping noise that becomes
inaudible after the engine warms up.
The service station that did the
replacement labor used a
stethoscope today and determined
that the tapping noise is indeed
coming from the area of the
Crankshaft Sensor, and that the noise
is actually still there after the engine
warms up, just much quieter.  They
said the Harmonic Balancer might be
the problem, but I’m skeptical of that
diagnosis.  Quoted $260 for GM part
from the Buick dealer and $110 labor.
Any thoughts on all this ?

I had a crankshaft position sensor put on my Jeep...different engine...same deal. I learned from the instructions that the part comes with a little disc shim glued on the end of the sensor. When inserting the sensor into the hole, you have to get the depth right or it can touch OR be too far away to pick up the magnetic signal. This disc is only 0.030 inches thick like a fingernail thick. It is to touch but rubs off leaving the right gap with the rotating flywheel. Short Answer: They may have to loosen the mount bolt and slide the sensor out a whisker so it doesn't tap the rotating flywheel which normally has some wobble I'm sure. Do not get a harmonic balancer replaced unless THEY pay if they are wrong.
