Auto trans does not enguage

Asked by Chuck Feb 11, 2019 at 04:55 PM about the 1998 Saturn S-Series 4 Dr SL1 Sedan

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Engine starts and runs fine. when shift to reverse or drive the trans does not
engage. I have removed the valve body cover and watched all the linkage
move including the manual valve. No codes are stored, and there is no input
shaft rpm when the engine is at idle.  When raise engine rpm still nothing
happens. fluid level is full and no noise like air in the fluid. Any suggestions?

It would not be surprising if the pump or clutches in the transmission are worn out. It is 20 years old, probably needs the transmission rebuilt.

Surely not, it only has 130000 miles on it, can't imagine it just wore out. Ha Ha it still air checks ok I suspect it's a pump issue as the solenoids were replaced about 2 years ago with the valve body for a harsh reverse shift. I'll pull it out and tear it down. Was hoping someone had the same issue and could give me a shortcut.
