96 suburban not holding vacuum but holding pressure

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Have a 96 suburban k1500 4wd rear ac controls too. I
replaced the compressor, accumulator n orifice tube.
Vacuum the system n It didn't hold vacuum all the way to
-30 however when I added some refrigerant its holding
pressure. My main question is do I need to put 64oz of
refrigerant for my compressor clutch to engage? Or it
should start engaging at certain point with less than 64oz
of refrigerant? So far I have added 12 oz of refrigerant but
bcz the vacuum I don't want to keep going n waste
refrigerant. I
My compressor is not engaging yet but like I said it seems
to be holding pressure which is weird because if it didn't
hold vacuum it should hold pressure either right?

Isolate your manifold gauge set and make sure that it's not leaking. If it's ok then something is leaking in the refrigeration system. Put dye in the system to find the leak. As for the compressor not coming on, unplug the low pressure cut out switch and jump the two wires on the plug together. The compressor should run then. Only charge the system with the correct amount of R134a as shown on the sticker under the hood. Hope that helps! Jim

Thanks for the help! I will definitely try that tomorrow. The question i also have is if the clutch should start kicking in as soon as it senses some pressure in the system for instance after I put 1 can 12oz of refrigerant or I need to put almost the 64oz that the whole system needs in order for the clutch to start kicking in? I'm thinking that maybe bcz i have put only 12 oz of refrigerant so far the clutch needs more refrigerant. However, my manifold gauges read 110 psi with the engine running on or off, ac control on and weather temp about 100 F. This is my worry that the gauges read 110 psi both sides already.
