Thumping Noise From Left Front Wheel

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Hi,

I have a 2006 Mercedes CLS 500. My car is
producing this thumping noise that becomes more
frequent as my car’s speed increases. It is much
more noticeable above 45-50 mph. That noise
continues even when I slow down until I’m at very
low speeds. The car also seems to steer
excessively when I hit a bump either way.
Sometimes, when I’m changing lanes, the car
seems to go into the other lane more quickly than it
should, and I have to correct it. The car remains
straight if the road is smooth. The brakes don’t
vibrate upon braking. The car only has 65,000 miles
but there are several things that could be wrong. It
could be simply an alignment or it could be a whole
new front end. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

I would first check the tire to see if it is coming apart or damaged. Have an alignment shop check it out.

The steering and pull when hitting bumps could be a bad tie rod end. The thumping could be a bad tire. Like FOR suggests, take it to an alignment shop, they can asses the front end.

I think it needs put on a rack. Also check Sway bar links, Brakes, Wheel bearings, Loose suspension & brake bolts/nuts, Worn Parts.

Tire may have a broken belt or separating, Car needs looked at before driving or at least at highway speeds. If you can not look it over yourself take it too a shop that does frontends, Suspensions, Brakes and tires. Shock may be busted too.

I will take it to a shop tomorrow. I was thinking ball joints too but who knows. There is a kit for the front end that includes several components that I may purchase if I can find out the issue. Thanks for the insight.

I had exactly the same issue, and when I checked it out, it was my neighbors dog wrapped around my wheel
