Truck will crank and run until I let go of ignition switch

Asked by Mjwshagy Apr 19, 2018 at 07:39 PM about the 1997 Dodge RAM 3500 ST Club Cab LB RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 1997 Dodge 3500 diesel cranks right up. But when I let
go of ignition switch the engine cuts off immediately. I have
already replaced the ignition switch with no change in
problem.

Did you inspect the wires that go to the switch?

From what I can easily see they look fine no burn or bare spots. But I didn't trace out the wires.

I was wondering if the wires are damaged or shorted out somewhere in the steering column. I would look at any plug connectors in case one is loose.
