2005 Dodge Ram 5.7 HEMI shut off while driving 50mph. No warning it just died

Asked by JD Jun 27, 2020 at 01:41 PM about the 2005 Dodge RAM 1500 SLT Quad Cab 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Never happened before and happened without warning. No engine codes
before or after stopping.  Engine just shut off. I placed the tranny in P and tried
to restart. It acts like it wants to start and stutters but won't run.

OBD won't read the fuel pump and the best thing to use is your ear while someone turns he key to the on position. You can either listed at the filler or the tank itself and should hear a whirring sound for a few seconds when the key turns to on and primes the pump. If fuse and relay are good and no whirring sound then the fuel pump died and time for a new one. Did it myself but 20 gallons of gas is heavy (6.3lbs per gallon) and the pump never fails with just a couple gallons in it. Two jacks to slowly drop the tank to access the top of the tank and change out the pump. Lots of dirt and rocks on top of the tank and between the heat shield and tank. It's not fun but can be done. New pump in and back on the road.
