knocking

my 5.7L hemi went low on oil about 5 quarts low. Now it its knocking. I removed oil pan and everything looks great and tight. Does anyone know if it is a lifter.The knock sounded like it was coming from the oil pan. Please help

it could still be coming from your bottom end, even if everything seems tight. try putting in a little bit thicker oil or maybe a quart of lucas oil stabilizer. that should solve it. if it still persists then it might be rocker slap.

If the knock changes from when the engine is under load, such as light accelleration to no load like when you're just maintaining speed to coasting, you have a rod knock. Unless you actually looked at the bearings, you can't tell this unless the damage is severe. You'll hear lots of knocking with a slightly damaged bearing but the oil won't allow you to move the rod on the journal by hand. Good news is that it will only get worse in spite of all the thick oil and additives and you will find it eventually. Best to get out and get under as that was a LOT of oil missing when it was down.

its prolly from one of the mains you ran it so low on oil that it prolly created alot of friction causing the main bearings to heat expand and distort away from the crank, and because their two different metals the crank stays cooler than the mains and keeps the little bit of play between the two.
