96-01 interchangeable the 02 will fit and look great you will be happy right up until you try to start it and coughs and spits and sounds like it wants to start but then not really. Problem is the trigger wheel on the crankshaft and just like it sounds it's a wheel that's attached to the crank that the crank position sensor reads as the crank turns and it has some little square shaped punches in it and those are what the the crank position sensor reads to set timing to match the camshaft position sensor. No matter what anyone tells you the only way you will get around that is wiring in the ECM that matches the trigger wheel or swapping the crank so that the trigger wheel and CPS match either way is a absolute p.i.a. best off to triple check your new engine is compatible. I've made the mistake before a customer brought me a jeep liberty and replacement engine I was greener then installed it and just would not run. Dont go down that rd ended up having to pull the engine again and instal a proper one.
