98 Ram 1500 5.9 wont shut off, key removed

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Good morning,

My 1998 Dodge Ram 1500, 5.9 L V8, won’t shut
off ! Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Problem : Truck starts and drives without issue, no
engine light. I come to a stop, put the vehicle in
park, turn ignition off, remove key and the truck
stays running. I have no accessories and I can
NOT put the vehicle into gear. I remove the 50 amp
battery fuse that’s in the fuse box under the hood
to shut It off. With that fuse out, I can start and
shut off the truck ... but everything goes crazy,
horn beeps randomly and lights/windshield wipers
turn on.

I have replaced the ignition switch along with the
cylinder/key .. I have tried swapping out various
relays in attempt to figure It out but everything has
failed.

Please help :)

Try swapping the ASD relay with another relay (fuel pump, starter, etc.) in the "under the hood" power junction box. Almost sounds like the ASD relay is welded shut. O' course this is a wild guess. But since the ignition switch has been replaced, the ASD is next in line.

Thank you for your recommendation, I have already swapped out the ASD relay. I just went out and tried It once again to be sure, no change. I pulled the steering column apart tonight and went through all the wires looking for anything loose or pinched. I double and triple checked all my fuses and relays and swapped them with others. Still when I put in the 50 amp fuse labeled “battery” Witj the trick off It starts dinging as if the keys in the ignition and my abs and one other light comes on.
